The National Oil Corporation of Malawi (NOCMA) has expressed satisfaction with the progress it has made in transporting fuel by rail.
Using rail to bring fuel into Malawi will help the country reduce transportation costs, Malawi National Petroleum Corporation chief executive Clement Kanyama said in an interview on Friday.
Kanyama said this is in line with the vision of President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera and his administration to transform the railway infrastructure to reduce the cost of transporting goods and services to and from Malawi.
On Saturday, Malawi’s National Petroleum Corporation received 20 truckloads of fuel, each carrying about 40,000 litres. This means that Malawi received 800,000 litres of diesel via this train.
Speaking to journalists after the carriages arrived, garage manager Michael Malanga said the garage had received 23 million litres of diesel by train from August 2023 to June this year.
“As a NOCMA, “We are taking several initiatives to implement the Malawi 2063 Plan, one of which is to diversify the mode of transportation of fuel. So, in addition to transporting fuel by road, we are also transporting fuel from Nacala by rail,” he said.
