Montreal police seize about 30 stolen cars and thousands of dollars

Quebec police announced that more than 28 vehicles and thousands of dollars in cash were seized in the Montreal area this week as part of a crackdown on organized car thefts in the province.

Police spokesman Nicolas Scholtus said investigators searched buildings and vehicles in the Montreal area on Thursday in an investigation that began in March, targeting a criminal gang that was exporting stolen vehicles.

In addition to the vehicle, police found more than $17,000 Canadian dollars, more than $35,000 U.S. dollars and six cell phones.

The raid was carried out by a mixed team from various police forces, including the provincial police and the Montreal police, whose mission is to combat organized crime.

Canada’s second-largest port has become a major shipping hub for the export of stolen cars, with police finding nearly 600 stolen vehicles in containers at the port between December 2023 and March 2024, most of them from the Toronto area.

Earlier this week, the Equite Association, an insurance fraud prevention group, reported a 36 per cent drop in stolen vehicles in Quebec in the first six months of 2024 compared with the same period last year, thanks in part to increased border patrols, police collaboration and government action.
