July 19, 2024 (Khartoum) – Sudanese political groups and armed movements expressed cautious optimism on Friday after a phone call between Sudanese military leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and United Arab Emirates President Mohammed bin Zayed. They hope that the call will help end the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
On Thursday, the UAE’s official news agency reported that bin Zayed received a call from Burhan. The discussion focused on relations between the two countries and the latest developments in Sudan. Bin Zayed reportedly pledged his country’s support for efforts to stop the war.
Earlier on Friday, the press office of Sudan’s Sovereign Council revealed that Burhan expressed to Bin Zayed his concerns about Sudanese public accusations that the UAE supports the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group involved in the conflict.
Sudanese politicians have given positive comments on the call. Yasser Arman, leader of the Democratic Revolutionary Front, called the call “an important step towards peace” and urged Burhan to give priority to the Geneva negotiations to open humanitarian corridors and alleviate civilian suffering.
Similarly, Babikir Faisal, director of the Federal Conference’s executive office, called the call a “step in the right direction.” He expressed hope for wider regional involvement, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United States and the African Union, to complement the UAE’s efforts in resuming the Jeddah Forum talks.
“We hope that the UAE’s participation will facilitate a return to the Jeddah talks,” Faisal added. He warned against pressure that could hinder the negotiation process, stressing that the move “will help stop the war.”
Sharif Mohamed Osman, political secretary of the Sudanese Congress Party, considered the communication “an important turning point.” He highlighted past attempts by the UAE and Egypt to mediate between the military and the rapid security forces, saying that these attempts had made welcome progress in the principles of a political solution.
In addition, Umma Party leader Mubarak Fadil tweeted on the “X” platform, “I welcome the call between Lieutenant General Burhan and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed.” He expressed the hope that the call would be a good start to ending the suffering of the Sudanese people.
Fadil, one of the political leaders supporting the army, explained that the call between Burhan and Bin Zayed was not groundless, but was the need of regional and international developments, which demanded an end to the conflict in Sudan.
Osama al-Sayed, spokesman for the Revolutionary Front, expressed support for this important move. He further called for three additional measures, including severing ties with the Islamic movement, clearing out elements in the army, adhering to this course and not backing down, and conducting direct negotiations with the Rapid Support Forces to reach a peace agreement.
Meanwhile, Sudanese coalition spokesman Mohammed Samani said the call between Burhan and bin Zayed was aimed at breaking the deadlock between Sudan and the UAE, which he claimed was using the Rapid Support Forces to kill Sudanese and destroy the Sudanese state.
Samani added: “The UAE finally realised that it could not achieve its goals in the region by supporting this militia. The UAE wanted to come in through this door, knowing that all the evidence and proof was against it.”
Sudan accuses the UAE of funding the Rapid Security Forces through Chad and the Central African Republic and providing them with weapons and military equipment.
Some media reports said Burhan and bin Zayed were expected to meet in Addis Ababa in the coming days, chaired by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
