(CNS) UPDATED 1 p.m.: A massive technology outage threw the world into chaos Friday, crippling PCs at banks, businesses, airlines and hospitals after a botched security software update. Hundreds of thousands of computers were hit when cybersecurity firm Crowdfunding The company had problems with software it uses to protect Microsoft Windows devices from malicious attacks, and Cayman Islands government officials said many of the company’s systems were affected.
“Computer Services is working with CrowdStrike on the necessary fixes and is urgently working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible,” officials said in a brief PSA this morning. “During this time, many public-facing services will be impacted. We ask for your patience and understanding. We will provide further updates once more information is available.”
At lunchtime, the government issued an update saying that as of 12:30pm, computer services had made progress in resolving the impact on systems.
“All production systems are operational and work has been completed for all ministries with ten currently underway. To date, 60 per cent of PC issues have been resolved and 100 per cent of server issues have been completed,” officials said. With regard to remote sites, work has been completed for 911, the Passport Office, Houses of Parliament, Customs and Border Control (CBC) while work is currently underway for Workforce Opportunities and Residency Cayman (WORC) and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The other remote sites will be addressed once the current sites are completed.”
