The legendary Geneva Motor Show will no longer take place. The International Auto Salon Standing Committee, the organizer of the event, announced on Friday that it will cancel next year’s event and does not plan to renew it in future years. The reason is the difficult market conditions after the end of the Covid-19 pandemic, and there are too many uncertainties in the automotive industry, which reduce the appeal of the big European show. Only the sister event will be held in Doha, Qatar, with the first event in 2023. The next event will be held in November 2025.
The Geneva Motor Show was first held in 1905 and is considered Europe’s main automotive event. In its heyday, the event had as many as 120 exhibitors and around 600,000 visitors. This year, the number of exhibitors dropped to 23 and the number of visitors to 168,000.
Alexandre de Senarclens, president of the show, blamed the cancellation of the event on a lack of interest from manufacturers. According to him, the final blow for the coming year is the growing competition from similar events such as the Paris and Munich shows. Organizers say further investments in the show are too risky.
This year’s event was significantly smaller, with Stellantis and Volkswagen not even participating.
