The people of Vaaa reached a milestone this week with the successful installation of a solar photovoltaic microgrid to provide residents with 24/7 electricity, making Vaaa the second island in Tonga to run on 100% renewable energy 24/7.
The achievement comes after Infratec NZ, led by Tim Ellis, completed the installation of the solar panels, inverters and battery energy storage system (BESS). JH Electrical Contractor, part of Madrid Helu, has been laying underground cables to each home.
“We are delighted to see continued power supply to Wa Island,” said Tim Ellis. “The hard work of our team, coupled with the support of JH Electrical, made this possible.”
Commissioning engineers are expected to arrive on site next week to conduct final testing. Town official Polonga Taualupe thanked Infratec, JH Electrical and the Tonga Government for their support.

The Tonga Renewable Energy Project (TREP) is financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Tonga Ministry of International Economic Development and Cooperation (MEIDECC).
In June, Kotu Island became Tonga’s first island to be included in TREPrunning entirely on renewable energy.
Meanwhile, land clearing and site office installation work is underway on Mo’angaone Island in preparation for the installation of its own grid.
