BEIJING: Eleven people have been killed and more than 30 are missing after a bridge collapsed during heavy rain in northern China, state broadcaster CCTV reported on Saturday (July 20).
A cross-river bridge in Shangluo, Shaanxi province, “collapsed due to sudden heavy rain and mountain torrents” around 8:40 p.m. Friday, the official Xinhua news agency reported, citing the Shaanxi provincial propaganda department.
According to CCTV, “nearly 20 vehicles and more than 30 people” were missing after a highway bridge collapsed into the river.
The broadcaster said all 11 confirmed victims were found in five vehicles that had been pulled from the water.
State broadcaster CCTV showed parts of the bridge submerged and river water rushing through it.
Large parts of northern and central China have been hit by heavy rain since Tuesday, causing flooding and severe damage.
On Friday, state media reported that heavy rains triggered floods and mudslides in Baoji city, Shaanxi province, killing at least five people and leaving eight missing.
State television showed images of the neighborhood completely submerged in mud and water, with excavators and residents working to clear the damage.
