Jamaican-American singer Sean Kingston and his mother, Janice Turner, were indicted in a Miami federal court on Friday on charges of $1 million in wire fraud. If convicted, the two face up to 20 years in prison on each of the six counts.
The 34-year-old entertainer, whose real name is Kisean Anderson, appeared in court with his 61-year-old mother after being arrested in May. They were charged with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and five counts of wire fraud related to their involvement in a scheme to use false documents to defraud sellers of high-end specialty cars, jewelry and other goods.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida said the defendants “improperly enriched themselves by falsely representing that they had made bank wires or other monetary payment transfers.”
The alleged scheme involved payments being routed through banks that never actually went through, resulting in the loss of more than $1 million in property, according to the office.
Arrest and prosecution
Kingston was arrested in California on burglary charges after SWAT raided his South Florida mansion on May 24. His mother was also arrested when SWAT raided his suburban Fort Lauderdale home, and Kingston was taken into custody hours later without incident.

The raids came after Kingston was indicted for allegedly defaulting on payments for luxury goods. Meanwhile, Turner has faced legal problems in the past for false loan applications and bank fraud.
Kingston is best known for his 2007 No. 1 single “Beautiful Girls” and his collaboration with Justin Bieber. The attorney suing Kingston for unpaid projects noted that Kingston “basically followed the script, saying he was working with Justin Bieber and obviously making a big deal out of it. It’s a rental property; he doesn’t own it, and he’s using his celebrity status to lure people into releasing stuff that he doesn’t pay for, and then he doesn’t pay them at all.”
