The Northern Lights could return to skies over parts of Canada as the sunspots that recently created the stunning aurora displays rotate back toward Earth.
Earlier this month, a sunspot unleashed a series of solar flares, the largest in nearly two decades, and this week it turned toward Earth and unleashed another powerful but less intense flare.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration rates geomagnetic storms on a five-level scale, predicting a moderate G2 geomagnetic storm this Friday and a G4 in early May.
NOAA’s aurora forecast for Friday evening shows the sight line, or southernmost extent of the northern lights, spanning the Toronto area and the Atlantic Ocean near Moncton, New Brunswick.
The forecast shows a lower chance of the northern lights along the route from Vancouver to Winnipeg and Thunder Bay, Ontario, and a higher chance in northern parts of the provinces and territories.
Canada’s Space Weather Service has also issued a major geomagnetic storm warning for the auroral zone, which covers the northern parts of most territories and provinces.
