EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell today expressed regret over a resolution approved by the Israeli Knesset on Thursday rejecting the creation of a Palestinian state.
“The EU deplores the resolution adopted by the Israeli Knesset on 18 July, which opposes the creation of a Palestinian state, even if it is part of a negotiated agreement with Israel,” Borrell said in a statement.
The official added that there is “strong consensus” in the international community that “the only sustainable solution to bring peace and security to the Middle East is a two-state solution.”
He also reiterated the EU’s “unwavering” commitment to “a lasting and sustainable peace, in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions,” based on a two-State solution.
Borrell defended that “Palestinians and Israelis have equal rights to live in security, dignity and peace” and said that “in line with their long-standing common position and UN Security Council resolutions, the EU will not recognize changes to the 1967 borders unless agreed by the parties concerned”.
The Knesset resolution denying the possibility of a Palestinian state was proposed jointly by right-wing and far-right coalition parties supporting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other parties with similar opposing tendencies.
The text of the resolution, which was passed by 68 votes in favor and nine against, states that the parliament “firmly opposes the establishment of a Palestinian state in western Jordan.”
