From nail advice to changing your diet – these expert tips will strengthen your brittle, sensitive nails.
No matter how much we want to hide cracked, thin, and flaking nails with permanent gel polish, there are many more natural (and healthier!) ways to strengthen our nails and finally get the manicure we want.
Why do nails crack?
Nails are made of keratin, a protein found in the skin and hair. As we age, the body produces less keratin, which causes the nails to become thinner and dry. In addition to aging factors, nails are also affected by unhealthy diet, exposure to extreme cold or harmful chemicals, frequent hand washing, lack of vitamins and minerals in the body…
Luckily, there are ways to strengthen our nails. We explore how to get stronger nails with the advice of the experts!
How to get stronger nails?
1. Take care of your hands and nails regularly
Regularly moisturizing your hands and nails can prevent further damage. Weak nails are often dry, so caress them often. You can use nourishing creams and lotions, or just plain olive oil, which has been shown to effectively strengthen nails and prevent cuticles.
2. Shorten them
Trim them regularly until they grow strong and stop curling. Short nails are less prone to breaking and peeling. Also, make them oval so there are no sharp edges that could break or wear away.
3. Forget Acetone
Use an oil-based nail polish remover that does not contain acetone, as it is too harsh on the nails and will further dry them out.
4. Don’t overdo hand hygiene
Although the COVID-19 epidemic is in full swing, do not wash your hands and disinfect excessively. In addition, choose disinfectants that are as gentle as possible and will not dry out the skin of your hands and nails.
5. Change your diet
Introduce foods rich in biotin – a vitamin that strengthens nails – into your daily menu. Eat more beans, nuts, eggs, mushrooms and bananas.
6. Don’t forget to drink water
Water is necessary for the health of the entire body, including your nails. Drink two liters of water every day.
7. Be careful about getting wet
When washing dishes, use gloves and a mild detergent. Likewise, avoid long showers, as nails become more flexible when wet and are more likely to crack.
8. Strengthen Nails Naturally
There are many natural remedies to strengthen nails. Before going to bed, wipe the nail plate with iodine and leave it on all night. Wash your hands in the morning and, since your nails will remain yellow due to the iodine, scrub them gently with a sponge and mild soap (or toothpaste). You can also soak your nails in warm milk and leave it on for 10 minutes. Your nails will become stronger due to the calcium in the milk.
9. Avoid wearing nail polish
Give your nails a “rest” after applying varnish (especially gel). When you apply varnish or gel to your nails, your nails can’t breathe, so they dry out and crack. If you’re already obsessed with nail polish, use a non-toxic brand. Pay attention to the bottle. If it says “3-free,” “5-free,” or “7-free,” the varnish is safe to use.
10. Take care of your nails
Stop using your fingernails as an aid when opening packages, removing labels, etc. Keep them safe and don’t use them as tools.
