The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has again warned that the situation in Sudan is “bleak” as the conflict enters a new phase.
The office referred to a recent report by the International Organization for Migration, which stated that more than 10 million people have been displaced since the outbreak of fighting last April, meaning that 20 percent of Sudan’s population, or one in five, was forced to flee during the fifteen days of last month.
OCHA explained that most of those who have fled their homes are within Sudan, namely about 8 million people, more than half of whom are children, while more than 2 million have sought refuge in neighbouring countries.
Ocha said humanitarian organizations are making tremendous efforts in Sudan to help those in need, including those fleeing the fighting.
The office said the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees distributed relief supplies to 2,000 displaced people and needy families in East Darfur today, and the World Food Programme also distributed food aid to more than 120,000 displaced people in South Kordofan.
But OCHA stressed that aid organizations in Sudan continue to face significant challenges, including continued insecurity, access restrictions and lack of funding.
He said that despite an increase in funding for this year’s humanitarian response plan in the past week, the plan has only been 30% funded since mid-year, with only $820 million received out of the $2.7 billion requested. The Office urgently called on donors to deliver on their pledges and increase their support.
