Basseterre, St. Kitts (SKNIS) – Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Prime Minister’s Office, Naeemah Hazelle, praised the expansion of the Senior Citizens’ Day programme during a ceremony held on Tuesday, July 16, 2024 at the Lighthouse Baptist Church in Sandy Point.
The Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Ageing and Disability Affairs has launched three new Seniors Day programmes for the Lodge, Tabernacle and Sandy Point communities, demonstrating the Government’s ongoing commitment to improving the lives of seniors across St. Kitts
At the launch ceremony, PS Hazelle extended greetings on behalf of the Prime Minister, Dr. Terence Drew, who is currently off-island on government business.
PS Hazelle assured participants and organisers of the Seniors Day event that the initiative has the full support of the Prime Minister’s Office. “We are committed to supporting this initiative to grow as far as it can and to show you the support you have been giving us as seniors in the community,” she noted.
The Seniors’ Day Program is considered a groundbreaking initiative for the compassionate care it provides to the elderly in St. Kitts. The program engages the elderly in organized social activities designed to enrich their lives and ensure they age with dignity. The program also includes an educational component that educates participants on healthy eating habits, disaster management, proper foot care for diabetics, financial management, and more.
“These organised activities are not only for your entertainment, but they also play a vital role in promoting your physical health, mental health, emotional resilience and overall quality of life as our older adults. I would also like to commend the staff of the Ministry of Empowerment, Ageing and Disability for these efforts, as active participation in social, physical and cognitive activities is essential to promoting your longevity, independence and sense of purpose,” said PS Hazelle.
The Permanent Secretary further noted that initiatives such as the Senior Citizens’ Day programme enabled the government to express its appreciation to senior citizens for their valuable contribution to nation building.
“Through the Seniors Enrichment Programme, we hope to create a more inclusive and supportive environment where your voices are not only heard but feel valued. These initiatives ensure that you as seniors remain active in society and can contribute your wisdom and experience to the betterment of our communities,” added PS Hazelle.
In addition to the new programs launched in The Lodge, Sandy Point and Tabernacle, Seniors Day programs are also active in the communities of East Basseterre, St. Peter and St. Paul.
