The United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) has called on President Hakainde Hichilema to set up a commission of inquiry into the recent scandal revealed at the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The call came after the resignation of ACC director-general Thom Shamakamba on Tuesday.
UKA President Sakwiba Sikota said Mr Shamakamba’s resignation should serve as a wake-up call to public servants who failed to perform their duties due to corruption or incompetence. Mr Sikota stressed the importance of transparency and suggested that the Commission of Inquiry be open to the public to allow Zambians to fully understand efforts to combat corruption. He shared these thoughts in an interview with ZNBC News in Lusaka.
However, Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa responded to UKA’s call, describing it as pre-emptive. Mr Mweetwa noted that the unfolding situation at the ACC should be allowed to develop without prejudice. He affirmed that while the establishment of a commission of inquiry falls within the purview of the President, the government will be mindful of the views of all stakeholders and will make a considered decision.
Mr Mwitwa, who is also the Minister of Information and Media, reiterated President Hichilema’s commitment to ensure that the investigative agency addresses all financial irregularities highlighted in the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) report. He added that the development of the Anti-Corruption Commission demonstrates transparency in anti-corruption management as the Commission encourages Commissioners and law enforcement officers to express their views publicly.
Mr Shamakamba’s resignation has sparked significant public concern and debate over the effectiveness of Zambia’s anti-corruption measures, prompting calls for a thorough investigation and greater accountability of public institutions.
