As the month of Muharram approaches, the ashura pot begins to boil in homes. However, making ashure has become a luxury for a large part of society, following the rise in food prices in an inflationary environment. The price of nuts, in particular, has attracted much attention. Last year, the prices of basic and decorative ingredients required for ashure (wheat, chickpeas, beans, dried apricots, raisins, hazelnuts, etc.) increased by 4-143%.

For example, according to the Association of All Dried Nuts Industrialists and Merchants (TÜKSıAD), the average price of raisins per kilogram last year was 80 liras, up 143% to 195 liras. Similarly, the average price of hazelnuts per kilogram was 250 liras last year, up 102% to 505 liras. The average price of wheat per kilogram increased by 5% to 31.5 liras. Citizens, whose purchasing power is rapidly declining, have found solutions by reducing or not putting in some of the ingredients needed for asura at all.
Responding to Cumhuriyet’s question, TÜKSŠAD Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors Yunus Emre Kaşıkcı provided the following information: “Last year, there was a sudden increase in prices due to input costs, which led to a decrease in consumption, depending on the purchasing power of consumers. That is why prices have remained stable this year, except for a few products that are added to Ashura. Today, in large cities, a can of Ashura costs between 650 and 700 liras, and outside large cities, between 550 and 650 liras.” Last year, the cost in large cities was 550-580 liras.
