Dulau’s home on Gabi Lane in Palma was reduced to a pile of ashes.
They have been homeless since Friday. The fire in one of the homes was a criminal act, while the other family still does not know how the fire destroyed their home. Both called for help.
At the Durau home in Alley Gabi in Palma, Jean Eddy, who is in his sixties, woke up around 3am to a muffled noise. When he opened his eyes, he saw that his room was on fire. He tried to shut it off, but failed. He then alerted his 22-year-old son Zidane, but he also failed.
“The flames started to spread. Everything started to burn, including the furniture. I told myself in my heart that I had to get my dad out. But everything was dark and the smoke started to suffocate us. I didn’t even know where I was.”Zidane said.
He broke through the door and unplugged the gas cylinder before rescuing his father. Zidane then returned inside in the hope of bringing the fire under control, but was unsuccessful. He notified his aunt, who lived next door, who alerted the emergency services. Firefighters arrived soon after, but by the time they arrived, all of Durao’s belongings had been reduced to ashes. Not much remained.
This was not the first time Durau had faced misfortune. Jean Eddy Durau’s wife, Priscilla, explained that their eldest son had died in an accident more than a decade earlier. “We were counting on the support of the Mauritians but we have lost everything”she confided. Priscilla was not at home when the fire broke out, she was at work as a nurse.
For her part, Marie Noëlle Lachooman, a resident of Résidence La Tourelle in Pointe-aux-Sables, lost everything when her house burned down in a criminal fire. She and her family found themselves without a roof over their heads in the middle of winter. She said she had been renting the house for three months and that the owner lived upstairs.
Around 9 a.m. on Friday, the homeowner’s brother arrived with a saber and began threatening Mary Noel’s daughter, claiming he was going to set their house on fire. He left, but a few hours later, around 2 p.m., he returned, still holding the sword, and entered his brother’s home. “I’ve set fire to the house. Aldegarde Aster»”, he shouted as he left the house before escaping.
Mary Noelle began to hear windows shattering and saw smoke coming out of the master’s bedroom. The flames then spread throughout the house. All of their furniture and personal belongings were burnt. A complaint was filed with the police station and the suspect was arrested and taken into police custody that same day.
