In recent days, the HNŽ Interior Ministry has received several complaints from tourists about the deprivation of private property. He wrote that this is mainly about women working in small groups on the way from the Franciscan monastery to the Old Town, who unknowingly blend in with foreign guests in order to steal their wallets. – We deprived the freedom of two people from Sarajevo Canton who came to Mostar, to the old part of the city, where they pickpocketed. HNŽ MUP spokesman Ljudevit Marić said there is a criminal environment prone to pickpocketing, theft and organized begging, which is most common in the HNŽ and Neum districts.
The Ministry of the Interior confirmed that in addition to pickpocketing, more serious crimes were recorded in Neum by the same criminal organization.
– They came to Neum in an organized manner, broke into apartments, broke into flats and stole mobile phones, wallets and documents on the beach – added Maric.
– For us, as a local community, safety comes first and within our capabilities and in communication with the MUP we want to reduce safety to the minimum possible – says Dragan Jurković, head of Neum (HDZBiH).
Jurkovic noted that some arrests had taken place in Neum, so he said that this did not affect the arrival of tourists. In Mostar, on the other hand, tourism staff pointed out that the problem had escalated due to a lack of adequate response, so they also recorded cancellations.
– We are losing contacts and business relations with many institutions. The red alert is coming, and travel agencies sent out messages to avoid Mostar as a tourist destination. UNESCO protected area
The Mostar City Tourism Board stressed that this is an issue that all city services should address, as it is a UNESCO protected area.
– Tourists will not come again – they will come now and never again, and we will not spread positive tourism stories about Mostar and Bosnia and Herzegovina if someone takes your documents and money on the first day – noted Elvira Dilberović, Director of Tourism of the City of Mostar.
Because, as he points out, a prerequisite for good and sustainable tourism is the security aspect, which is currently being violated. In addition to the presence of pickpockets, Mostar has recorded a large number of cases of begging, which is also a long-standing problem for which no solution has yet been found.
