Spain have a chance to win a fourth European Championship, which would take them above Germany as the record holder for most European Championship titles. Spain previously won the competition in 1964, 2008 and 2012. They were beaten on penalties by Italy in the semi-finals.
Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins (28) was the hero of the England team in the semi-final against the Netherlands. He came on in the 81st minute and scored a goal 10 minutes later in stoppage time, helping England advance to the European Championship final 2:1. This was his 14th appearance and his fourth goal in the national team jersey.
The striker was asked before the final about comments by Harry Kane, who described a “victory aura” ahead of the Netherlands game that has begun to guide England through difficult times. “You see teams like Real Madrid in the Champions League. They are comfortable without the ball and they have the confidence that once they have it they will score,” Watkins said, continuing:
“I feel like it’s the same here. We are definitely hard to beat. We only need one chance and we can win the game. It doesn’t matter if we don’t play well, we still have world-class talent and we can pop up and score goals.”
