The European elections are coming up. Agriculture is also one of the core areas of European politics, although the announced green policy measures do not even have the support of farmers across Europe.
So how should the environmental and nature protection aspects be balanced against the interests of farmers and food security? How do our parties and lists competing for seats in the European Parliament view this?
We leave our security to the Americans, our industry to China, our energy supplies to Russia and European farmers to green transition measures.

Farms in Slovenia are different from those elsewhere in the EU because they are smaller and more organic. Therefore, the Common Agricultural Policy should be more flexible and provide additional incentives for small organic farms. We want ambitious measures to protect and restore nature, which will benefit farmers the most.
Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS)
European agriculture will have to adapt to these changes. But the measures of the European left go too far, without conducting feasibility studies or evaluating how the legislation will affect agriculture. It is estimated that the passage of the pesticide legislation could reduce food security in Europe by 30%. Even if the law to restore nature is passed, it does not bring any benefits to European farmers, especially Slovenian farmers.
Vesna – Green Customer
Agriculture is friendlier to the environment and people, improves the quality of the food produced, allows the farmer to earn a higher income, and by reducing the use of sprays, protects him from increasingly common cancers. The ecological and less harmful farming is carried out on most Slovenian farms in hilly areas and in difficult conditions, proving that the only sustainable and competitive agriculture in flat countries is higher quality food with a higher added value.
Democratic Party of Pensioners of Slovenia (DeSUS) and Good Country
We advocate agricultural self-sufficiency, protection of farms (especially in mountainous areas) and organic farming. Food quality should be prioritized over quantity, thereby improving people’s health. Agricultural subsidies are mainly concentrated on large farms. This should change. Part of the subsidies should also be earmarked for farmers’ social security. The ultimate goal of all agricultural activities must be self-sufficiency.
Slovenian People’s Party (SLS)
We leave security to the Americans, industry to China, energy supplies to Russia and European farmers to green transition measures. This direction is unsustainable. Bans do not bring solutions. Transformation will only happen through innovation or accelerated provision of better alternative agricultural technologies, thus preserving a strong economy, agriculture, preserved cultural landscapes, traditions and, most importantly, food security and, for farmers, social protection.
New Slovenia – Christian Democrats (NSi)
Food production is a strategic issue. The EU must not undermine domestic agricultural production and farmers with unjustified green transition measures. As a last resort, we will import food, but environmental standards and food quality will be much worse. Sustainable agricultural practices must be encouraged. Innovation in fertilizers, sprays and breeding varieties is essential.

The scale of food production must not exceed the carrying capacity of the environment. The balance between nature and agriculture represents the extraction of substances from the environment to meet the needs of food production and doing so in a way that prevents soil degradation, unsustainable use of plant protection products, measures to store carbon in the soil, etc., while ensuring the return of substances to the environment in order to ensure its protection for future generations.
Slovenian Green Party
Farmers are the biggest victims of climate change, and agriculture suffers the most. The key is to update the Common Agricultural Policy, which must ensure that food is healthy, high-quality, affordable, and that farmers have social security. We must strengthen support for small farms rather than large agricultural product groups. Agriculture is not only about food production, but also about the protection of cultural landscapes and traditions.
Social Democratic Party (SD)
Intensive agriculture, which provides us with food, is both a major contributor to climate change and the first victim of its consequences. Therefore, a balance must be found, and we believe that the key lever is precisely changes in agricultural policies that will be able to encourage farmers to adopt more sustainable practices.
Citizen Movement Resni.ca
We support a balanced approach that respects the natural environment without compromising food security and agricultural productivity. We oppose coercive and science-free environmental measures that have a negative impact on agriculture within the framework of the totalitarian “green agenda”.

We urgently need to protect native seeds and prevent GMOs from invading our fields, otherwise we risk total nutritional dependence. This is one of the reasons why farmers are protesting because their crops are not competitive, especially for small farms that are on the verge of extinction. With water regulation, watersheds and irrigation, greenhouses… we can achieve nutritional self-sufficiency, which is so important.
