Political commentator George Phiri says the growing trend of political parties endorsing presidential candidates ahead of electoral conventions is undemocratic.

Both the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) have nominated their presidential candidates and no one has challenged them yet.
The CPM has decided to retain President Lazarus Chakwera and the DPP has backed its leader Peter Mutharika as the front-runner for next year’s elections. Some have even blamed Mutharika’s resignation on
This is despite the fact that political parties are due to hold electoral conventions next month, where delegates will be free to elect leaders of their choice.
In response to this trend, Phiri advised the delegates not to be influenced by such support and stick to democratic principles.
Meanwhile, while the trend has been attributed solely to the Maharashtra Party and the BJP, other commentators have also opined that the malady has spread even to other political parties, most of which suffer from founders syndrome.
For example, the Afford Party will always be led by Enoch Chihana, the son of the party’s founder, Chakufwa Chihana. The same is true for the UDF, whose leader is Atupele Muluzi, the son of Dr Bakili Muluzi. You can’t even talk about the PPP, it’s still in the hands of the PPP.
