Keiko Fujimori, the 85-year-old daughter of former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori and leader of Peru’s main right-wing party, announced on Sunday that he will be a presidential candidate in the next election in 2026.

“I discussed with my father and decided that he would be a presidential candidate,” Keiko Fujimori wrote on her social network, attaching a video showing her father, who announced in May that he had a malignant tongue tumor.

Alberto Fujimori, of Japanese descent, ruled Peru with an iron fist between 1990 and 2000, defeating the Maoist Shining Path guerrillas under his leadership, whose main leaders were arrested. He was imprisoned for 16 years for crimes against humanity until the country’s Supreme Court ordered his “immediate” release at the age of 85. He was released on December 7, 2023 under the protection of a pardon for humanitarian reasons, despite opposition from the Inter-American judicial system.

He is serving a 25-year prison sentence for two massacres of civilians during his fight against the Shining Path in the early 1990s. His daughter, Keiko Fujimori, the leader of the right-wing Popular Power party, which her father joined on June 15, told Peruvian newspaper El Comercio on Sunday that she saw in his father the ability to run for president again.

“He is walking again and is also undergoing radiotherapy. When we talk about politics, I see his desire for life and I am sure he will recover. He will be an excellent candidate and a great president. In 2026, we will campaign to the rhythm of the Chinese,” said the three-time Peruvian presidential candidate.

Last May, the former president, known as “El Chino,” reported on his social networks that a malignant tumor had been found on his tongue, where he had been suffering from cancer for more than 27 years. In 2018, Fujimori revealed that doctors had found tumors in his lungs and that he had undergone more than one operation for the cancerous lesions on his tongue.
