More than 744,000 Burkinabés displaced by terrorist attacks have returned to their homes or resettled in safer areas, the Burkina Faso Information Agency (AIB) reported on Friday, July 12, 2024, citing the ministry responsible for Prospective.
“As of June 30, 2024, the operation to recover the national territory has allowed the gradual return of 774,002 people from 122,123 families,” said the Minister of Humanitarian Action, Nandy Soume, as quoted by the communications service of the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Prospects.
“This return, while beneficial and encouraging, also presents us with the major challenges that remain in the humanitarian response, particularly in terms of support measures, including shelter,” Minister Sommet said at the launch of the construction of 1,000 shelters for internally displaced persons in Nagreongo, 40 kilometres east of Ouagadougou.
According to the government, by the end of November 2023, more than 340,000 internally displaced persons had returned to areas cleared of terrorists.
