The Russian city of Novorossiysk, on the Black Sea coast in the southern European part of the country, declared a state of emergency on Sunday due to a forest fire that had engulfed an area of 22 hectares, Reuters reported, citing the local mayor.

Novorossiysk Mayor Andrey Kravchenko said on Telegram that authorities were ready to evacuate about 200 people from the danger zone and had deployed helicopters to put out fires in the mountains.

The fire spread to the southern Krasnodar region, a popular destination for Russian holidaymakers.

Severe heat, drought and strong winds have led to devastating forest fires this month, burning more than 331,000 hectares of land, particularly in Russia’s Far East.
