Rome, July 14 (ACI Prensa) – The Vatican spoke out after the attacks on former President Donald Trump and political leaders in Latin America and the world, condemning political violence and supporting democracy.
“The Holy See expresses its concern about yesterday’s violent events, which harmed people and democracy, causing suffering and loss of life,” the Vatican press office said in a statement, according to Vatican News.
The Vatican “joins the American bishops in praying for America, for the victims and for peace in the country, so that the causes of violence will never prevail”.
Trump was shot and injured at a campaign rally in the western Pennsylvania town of Butler. The incident occurred around 6:20 p.m. (local time) on Saturday, July 13, shortly after the rally began.
Trump said in a statement posted on the “truth” social network that a bullet pierced the top of his right ear. After being treated at a nearby hospital, the former president flew to New Jersey overnight under Secret Service protection.
World leaders react to Trump’s attack
“In any case, we do not approve of what happened to former President Donald Trump. The violence was irrational and inhumane,” Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador wrote on his X (former Twitter) account.
“I express my full support and solidarity with President and candidate Donald Trump, who was the victim of an assassination attempt by COWARD that put his life and the lives of hundreds of others in danger,” Argentine President Javier Milei shared on X.
“The desperation of the international left is not surprising, as today they see their own pernicious ideology gone to waste and are willing to destabilize democracies and promote violence to seize power. Fearing defeat at the polls, they resort to terrorism to impose their perverse and authoritarian agenda,” the president said.
Milley said: “I hope President Trump recovers soon and that the U.S. election can be held in a fair, peaceful and democratic manner.”
The Presidency of the Republic of El Salvador published a message in X, stating that “President Bukele unequivocally condemns the assassination attempt on former President Donald J. Trump (…) in Pennsylvania.”
“President Bukele’s prayers are with President Trump and his family during this difficult time. He also wishes him a speedy recovery and hopes he returns to good health soon.”
“El Salvador reaffirms its commitment to democratic principles and stands with the United States in the face of this attack,” the message concluded.
On the other hand, the Colombian government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also condemned the attack against Trump, emphasizing in a statement that “as a country that has suffered violence, we reiterate that it has no place in political and electoral debates. This unfortunate incident is an attack on democracy. “We stand with the United States in this difficult moment. “
“The world does not need more wars, it needs peace, understanding, growth and development. We need to reduce the gap of inequality so that humanity can grow and develop in harmony. We deny violence in all its meanings and we reject the attacks on former President Trump,” wrote Nicolás Maduro Guerra, son of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
French President Emmanuel Macron called the assassination attempt “a tragedy for our democracy” and wished former President Trump a speedy recovery, adding that “France shares the shock and indignation of the American people.”
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was “sickened” by the shooting. “I cannot stress this enough: political violence is never acceptable. My heart goes out to former President Trump, those who attended the event, and all Americans,” he said.

Suspect in Trump attack identified
The FBI has identified a suspect who harmed Trump. It is Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. According to authorities, Crooks had no identification documents and was identified through DNA analysis after he was killed by a Secret Service sniper.
The FBI said in a statement that the incident “remains an active and ongoing investigation” and asked anyone with information to call or submit photos or videos online.
Kevin Rojack, the FBI Pittsburgh special agent in charge of the case, said Saturday evening that the motive for the shooting, which left one rally attendee dead and two others wounded, remained unclear. Police said all three victims were men.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Cuomo reported that Congress will hold hearings on the assassination attempt and Secret Service Director Kimberly Chettle will be invited to participate.
