Former President Donald Trump was injured at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday night in what the FBI is describing as an assassination attempt, heightening concerns about political violence during the U.S. election season.
The rally, held in Pittsburgh’s north, was abruptly interrupted after the first gunshot when Trump put his hand over his right ear and ducked behind the podium, causing chaos among attendees. A voice shouted, “Get down, get down, get down!” More gunshots followed, sending the crowd into panic. Trump’s ear was bleeding, and Secret Service agents quickly escorted him off the stage.
The attack left one spectator dead and two others seriously injured. The FBI identified the gunman as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. The attacker opened fire from a high vantage point outside the venue and was later shot dead by law enforcement officers.
The FBI said: “This remains an active and ongoing investigation.”
Trump described his injury in a social media post: “A bullet went through the upper right ear… there was a lot of blood.”
Politicians around the world condemned the attack. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called it “an inexcusable attack on our shared democratic values” and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said “political violence is never acceptable.”
US President Joe Biden expressed relief that Trump was reportedly “behaving well”, adding: “We can’t allow this to happen.”
