In the men’s doubles competition at Wimbledon, the northern neighbours can rejoice as Finn Harry Helivala tied for first place with Briton Henry Patten.
The evenly ranked Heliovaara/Patton defeated the Australian pair of Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson 6:7 (7:9), 7:6 (10:8), 7:6 (11:9) in this extremely close final. At the same time, the Australians led with a total score of 126:116.
Hliwala and Patten, who had only played against each other for three months, saved as many as three match points in the second set. After three sets, neither player was able to break the other’s serve.
After the game, Heliwara was interviewed with tears in his eyes. “I admit that we were a little lucky today, but sometimes you need luck to win a tennis match… The tears speak for themselves, it was very exciting,” said the Finn.
Patten, who worked as a statistician at Wimbledon eight years ago, praised the Main Arena crowd. “You were all great,” the Briton admitted. “The match couldn’t have been fairer. To be honest, I don’t remember exactly what happened. I think the same goes for Harry.”
The 35-year-old Herivala has never played at the main table of a Grand Slam singles tournament, but in men’s doubles, she has reached the quarterfinals at the French Open and the U.S. Open. Last year, she won the U.S. Open mixed doubles with Kazakhstan’s Anna Danilina.
