MEMPHIS, Tenn. (DCC) — The Douglas Community Center hosted a mural dedication that included mosaic art by artists Jamond Bullock and Eric Okdeh.

The dedication was a highlight of the Douglas Freedom and Heritage Festival’s celebration of community pride.

“The Juneteenth Heritage Mural at the Douglas Pool House is our second collaboration and uses paint and stained glass mosaics to reflect Douglas’ unique history,” shared Jamond Bullock. “This project celebrates the community’s vision and resilience.”

“It’s been a real dream to take some of their hard work with me to other places and by doing that, spread awareness of the existence of life sentences without parole and challenge the way people think about these men and women,” Eric Okdeh said of having the help of “the people” at SCI Phoenix on this project in Memphis.

The two artists also hosted a large painting event in Douglas Park for Juneteenth 2023, with many volunteers coming out to help expand the scope of the art.

The mural depicts Douglass’s rich Black history and honors ancestors celebrated at the park every Juneteenth.
