Dear Editor,
I cannot help but express my deep concern and worry about Mr. Hughes’ possible candidacy for the nation’s highest office. As a citizen of Guyana, it is my duty to oppose this man’s candidacy given his questionable record and lack of commitment to the well-being of our nation.
Mr. Hughes’ history of putting personal gain ahead of national progress is well known. His actions, or inactions, have contributed significantly to the stagnation of American progress in the 21st century. It is shocking to think that a man with such a history has been given the responsibility of leading our country.
One of the most egregious examples of his disregard for the rule of law and democratic principles was his decision to bring a no-confidence motion to court, ultimately before the region’s highest court, on the grounds that 33 votes did not equal a majority of 65. This move was a blatant attempt to subvert the will of the people and cling to power at all costs. The international community was shocked by this blatant disregard for democratic norms, and our country suffered the consequences of this embarrassment.
Furthermore, his recent statement of “client first, country first” clearly demonstrates his self-interest agenda, which runs counter to the principles of public service.
This attitude clearly shows that he puts his personal interests above the welfare and interests of the country and the people.
Guyana is on track to becoming a global player, attracting international attention and investment. In light of this, it is even more imperative that we deny Mr. Hughes a candidacy for president or any public office. We cannot return to the dark ages of political manipulation and stagnation.
We deserve a leader who puts the interests of Guyana and its people above personal ambition. We must learn from past mistakes and ensure our leaders are held accountable for their actions.
As future elections approach, we as citizens must remain vigilant about the character and track record of those running for public office.
We must never forget the lessons of the past and the harm Mr. Hughes’ actions have caused our country. We have a responsibility to ensure that our elected representatives prioritize the greater good and work to improve our country rather than pursue personal gain.
I urge you, my readers, to exercise your democratic right and carefully consider the consequences of electing Mr. Hughes to any public office. It is our responsibility to protect the integrity of our democracy and the well-being of our nation.
Sincerely,
Hemraj Vishor Kisong
