As campaign season heats up, new faces emerge in Senate race

(Koror, Palau) With less than four months until the general election, four newcomers are set to join the Senate race. Vieira Toribiong, Ann Singao, Siegfried Nakamura, Joan Lizon Tacon and Brian Melere are currently running for Senate seats, joining the current 13 senators who are expected to run for re-election.

According to the Palau Election Commission (PEC), no candidate for the Senate has yet to file a formal nomination. The deadline for all candidates to file nominations is August 7, according to the PEC website. The deadline for registering to vote in the general election is September 6.

If a primary is held, the deadline to register to vote is July 26. Absentee ballots will be available by the application deadline of Oct. 29, and the deadline to receive a ballot is Nov. 12.

Four Senate candidates have publicly announced their candidacy on radio talk shows, and two have announced their candidacy on television. More candidates are expected to step forward as the campaign season continues. (Author: Olkeriil Eoghan Ngirudelsang)
