July 11, 2024 (GEDAREF) – A drone struck the headquarters of the Gedaref state government on Thursday during a public rally in support of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), which are currently clashing with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Two civilians were injured in the attack and authorities quickly arrested a suspect.
The drone strike was the second of its kind in the city of Gedaref. On April 9, a similar attack hit the General Intelligence Directorate headquarters and other government buildings.
Military sources told Sudan Tribune that two suicide drones attempted to attack the event, which was attended by governors, security officials and prominent community members and aimed at bolstering public support for the Sudan Armed Forces’ war efforts and national security measures.
Preliminary investigations showed that the drones came from the “Um Sharaba” area in central Gedaref, flew over “Ad Al Tin” and then aimed at the government secretariat. The drones did not hit the intended targets, one crashed near a maternity hospital and the other crashed in the Al Sadaqa neighborhood, injuring two civilians.
The Gadaref government expressed deep condolences for the civilian casualties and condemned the attack by the Rapid Security Forces, accusing them of undermining security in the area.
The government stressed that the rally aims to unite society behind the armed forces, strengthen their capabilities, and mobilize local resistance to defend the country.
Gedaref remains vulnerable to RSF incursions due to its proximity to Al Jazira and Sennar governorates, where the RSF is based. In response, authorities have stepped up security measures, activated local resistance groups, and prepared for possible emergencies.
Over the past week, Gedaref has received more than 100,000 displaced people from Dinder and Singa in Sennar State, who were forced to flee the occupation of those areas by the Rapid Rescue Forces.
