KP Sharma Oli, chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal-United Marxist-Leninist (CPN-UML) and a three-time prime minister, is expected to form the next government with the support of the center-left Nepali Congress party.
As per the agreement reached between the two parties, Oli, 72, is expected to hand over the post to Congress leader and five-time Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba (78) at the end of his parliamentary term.
BREAKING PROMISE
Political journalist Kunda Dixit told AFP that an alliance between Deuba and Oli could be more stable as they represent the two largest parties in parliament and are “not so ideologically opposed”.
“But we have seen leaders break promises and betray each other in the past, so anything is possible,” he added.
The Maoists, led by Dahal, have played a major role in Nepali politics, waging a decade-long anti-government insurgency that has killed more than 16,000 people.
Nepal signed a peace agreement in 2006 that ended its civil war. The agreement abolished Nepal’s monarchy, brought Maoists into the government and made Dahal the first post-war prime minister.
