Finland’s parliament on Friday passed a highly controversial law that gives border guards the right to prevent asylum seekers from Russia from entering the country.
On Friday, Eduskunta voted 167 to 31 to approve a law that gives border guards the right not to allow asylum seekers from Russia to enter the country.
Since the Eduskunta Constitutional Council decided that this is an emergency law, it can be said that the approval of 5/6 of the MPs is required to pass the law.
The Finnish government closed its eastern border for the first time in November last year. Before Finland closed its eastern border, more than 1,300 people had arrived in the country from Russia. In February this year, Finnish Prime Minister Olpo said that the Finnish border with Russia would remain closed because thousands of third-country nationals in the Russian border area were looking for opportunities to enter Finland illegally.
Orbó said the new law was important to stem the influx of refugees across the eastern border, which critics say violates human rights and Finland’s international obligations, including EU rules.
