In order to protect the lives, property and natural wealth of the beautiful villages of Limassol, the communities of Pachna, Apaisia, Finio, Eptagoneia and Vounio set out to create a cooperative network and set up a monitoring center to minimize the risk of fire and its impact when it occurs.

The monitoring center will install special equipment in the community, and use special artificial intelligence technology to scan the area in real time through special cameras to detect fires in time. Once a fire is detected, the system will immediately notify the center and the agricultural and forestry fire management department (Cyprus Fire Service and Forestry Department), thereby reducing their response time and providing tactical advantages for their management.

The communities have applied for funding from the European Rural Development Programme 2014-2020 through the Limassol Development Corporation’s local LEADER programme in partnership with the Fireline Network, a company specialising in fire safety, firefighting and training. The centre operates on a budget of €66,000.

The mission of the monitoring center is to support agricultural and forestry fire management teams and communities in preventing and responding to wildfires by providing real-time warnings and useful firefighting information using advanced technology. Origin. The FireWatch system will monitor the landscape and collect data using advanced tracking devices. The monitoring system will be placed at high locations (existing telecommunication masts or monitoring points).

The members of the network decided to designate Pachna as the central monitoring point, which is the location of the regional fire station, which is staffed by firefighters all year round. The center will become another tool that will help in extinguishing fires and the commendable work of the Agro-Forestry Fire Management Department, the Fire Department and the Forestry Department.
