The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) has announced that thousands of workers at Ford’s Silverton assembly plant in Pretoria will return to work after days of strike action.
Last WeekThe union said it would take part in industrial action, demanding the car company pay bonuses and share profits.
The strike was then forced to stop when Ford applied for a temporary injunction from the Johannesburg Labour Court. Despite the injunction, union workers continued to protest. Ford warned that any continued strike action would be illegal and unprotected.
On Thursday, the union announced that the deadlock had been broken after negotiations with Ford.
“Despite Ford obtaining an interim order from the Labour Court and subsequent threats to sack workers, more than 3,000 workers have refused to return to work, bringing production to a standstill,” AMU secretary general Owen Gim said in a statement. “AMU…negotiated that Ford pay R20,000 per worker…as a mechanism to break the deadlock, and that these payments be paid as soon as possible after the workers return to work.”
Jim said the workers will not face any disciplinary action for participating in the strike and should return to work Friday morning.
Ford confirmed in a statement that it had reached an amicable agreement with the union and the plant will resume production of the Ford Ranger.
