Blantyre, July 11, Mana: Government has expressed satisfaction with the new K1.1 billion South Chorley Health Centre which is expected to serve 44,000 residents in South Chorley town and its environs.
Speaking at the opening of the facility on Wednesday, Health Minister Kumbize Chiponda said the facility is high quality and well equipped to provide basic health services to the community, including children under five years old.
“We commend the contractor for building this state-of-the-art facility in Blantyre and other districts should emulate this standard when building similar medical facilities,” she noted.
Chiponda assured the community that government will continue to work with partners under the Health Sector Consolidated Fund to build more health posts across the country to bring quality health services closer to the people.
“In some areas, people still have to travel long distances to get health services, as is the case here. Therefore, there is a need to build proper health centres to provide services easily to people,” the minister said.
She called on the management committee of the health facility to take due responsibility to ensure that the health facility is maintained and no medical staff are involved in drug theft.
Dan Pyne, head of the British High Commission’s human development team, said he was equally impressed by the new state-of-the-art South Chorley Health Centre.
He pledged that the British High Commission would work with the Ministry of Health to support the health sector in delivering the services required to improve the health and wellbeing of the community.
Traditional Authority (TA) Somba thanked the government for constructing the health centre to provide health-related services to the community in the area.
He urged his subjects to take responsibility for the facility to ensure it continues to benefit present and future generations.
Zomba requested the government to consider rehabilitating the road leading to the facility to ease the mobility difficulties of patients, including pregnant women.
The facility will offer outpatient clinics, under-five clinics, maternity and family planning services.
