The funeral procession of Pashtun Tahafouz movement leader and folk poet Gila Man Wazir set out from Pakistan’s capital Islamabad today for North Waziristan where it was met with a large number of mourners.
Members, leaders and supporters of the movement attended the funeral of Jira Man Wazir on Thursday.
Addressing a crowd in Badar Bela, Manzoor Pashtin, leader of the Pashtun Tahafouz movement, said their struggle would continue in earnest:
“This man held himself high. He held it once. He had marks of dog bites on his body. He was out of power. Was our friend. He accepted martyrdom but did not succumb to the general’s oppression.
Manzoor Pashtin, leader of the Pashtun Tahafouz movement, stopped at several places along the way to address the crowds, saying their patience had been worn out.
It was the first major funeral procession for the political activist, with a large group travelling from Islamabad to Waziristan, and as per his wishes, the funeral procession was draped with the Afghan tricolour flag.
Jira Man Wazir was severely beaten by some people in Islamabad last Sunday and was hospitalized in Islamabad for three days, but the news of his death came last night.
The Pakistani government has not yet made any statement on the matter.
The funeral of Gila Man Wazir is scheduled to be held tomorrow, Friday, at his ancestral grave.
Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, including Afghans living in several countries around the world, also expressed sadness over the death of Gila Man Wazir and called him a loss to the Pashtun people.
