This month, the Kingdom of Tonga and Australia’s National Transport Research Organisation (NTRO) launched a 12-month strategic transport infrastructure consultancy project, the first of a planned 10-year programme to improve Tonga’s transport system.

NTRO Executive Director Jason Sprott signed the agreement in Melbourne with Tonga Infrastructure Chief Executive Lopeti Heimuli. “Our team is committed to helping Tonga achieve higher infrastructure standards,” Sprott said.

This week, key equipment including the Infrastructure Assessment Vehicle and Project Leader Sosefo Vakata’s work vehicle arrived in Tonga. “It is exciting to be working with NTRO and using their world-class transport laboratory services,” said Minister of Infrastructure, Hon Sevenitini Toumo’ua.

The project will begin with a road and aviation assessment. NTRO experts will focus on asset management, transport safety and sustainability. “We are committed to improving Tonga’s roads, ports and airports,” Toumo’ua said.

The collaboration laid the foundation for major improvements to Tonga’s transport infrastructure.
