Palau Koror – The Palau National Olympic Committee (PNOC) and the Ministry of Education (MOE) this week launched the 2024 Palau Youth Games with 430 students participating in 10 different sports.

The project, funded by a Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) grant, aims to promote character development and social skills among young people through sport.

The Ministry of Education is responsible for the registration of students, which will be held from April to June 2024. Due to the popularity of the program, registration will close after reaching 430 participants. However, PNOC is still accepting inquiries from interested students, and staff are checking with coaches of sports that have not yet reached capacity to see if there are any vacancies. PNOC Sports Coordinator Stephanie Ngirchoimei pointed out in a radio interview that some sports have already reached high numbers, with some having more than 90 participants.

The festival is open to students aged 6 to 18 and includes a variety of sports including tennis, table tennis, weightlifting, swimming, volleyball, basketball, kayaking, archery and athletics.

The event kicked off last Friday with an opening ceremony and sports presentation. Due to Constitution Day and the Ministry of Education’s Education Conference, the event will be suspended from July 9 to 11, and resume on July 12, with an awards ceremony and closing ceremony on July 13.
