Vanessa Maresch, a licensing expert at Salt Essential IT, urged individuals using TikTok to exercise caution as the platform reportedly secretly collects more user information than necessary without their consent.
This has led to the popular viral video platform being banned in several countries over privacy and cybersecurity issues, according to experts from Namibia-based computer security service provider.
According to an article in Tech Explore, the Chinese company has been banned from devices used by workers in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Taiwan, India, and the European Union. Additionally, despite the ongoing controversy, the company is currently banned from government-issued mobile devices in Belgium, the United States, and Canada.
“We found that the popular viral video platform TikTok was tracking people even when they were not actively using its app,” reads a post on Privacy Wiki.
Maresch made the remarks at a cybersecurity awareness training for Namibian media outlets in Windhoek on Monday. The training, aimed at combating cybercrime, was co-organized by the Namibian Ministry of Information and aimed at educating people on how to use the internet and avoid becoming victims of cyberattacks and cybercrime.
Common scams
Maresch said individuals should be wary of a common tactic used by scammers: receiving a phone call out of the blue stating an emergency, requesting personal information or money, being told to keep it confidential, and the situation seeming too good to be true.
“If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. When clicking on a link, make sure the protocol of the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) link has an ‘s’ in https, which means the site is secure. Avoid opening your banking apps while connected to free Wi-Fi, and avoid posting too much personal information on TikTok, which has been reported and even banned in some countries for secretly collecting user information without their consent,” Maresch said.
The training focuses on threats and vulnerabilities on the Internet; preventing and defending against cybersecurity threats; managing cybersecurity threats; building resistance or immunity to cybersecurity threats; an introduction to the forms and types of phishing attacks; preventing and defending against phishing attacks; managing phishing attacks or incidents and building resistance or immunity to phishing threats and attacks.
