33-time German football champions Bayern Munich have appointed Vincent Kompany as their new head coach.
Kompany, who previously coached England’s Burnley club, has signed a three-year contract with Bayern. According to the BBC, Bayern paid 12 million euros for the Belgian’s services. The 38-year-old Kompany replaces Thomas Tuchel, who left the club Bayern had already announced the news in February.
“As a coach, you have to stick to your identity. I want my teams to have the ball and be creative. Also, my players have to be aggressive and courageous on the pitch. If the foundations are in place, success will follow,” Kompany said in a press release.
Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund noted that Kompany’s tactical approach fits in with the club’s vision. “Vincent is a coach who fits in very well with Bayern’s playing philosophy and identity. He is young, ambitious and has international experience. He also knows how to communicate with the players and has a clear idea of what should happen on the pitch.”
Bayern’s season this year was a complete failure. They finished third in the domestic league, were eliminated in the second round of the domestic cup, and lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final. With this, Bayern has been without a trophy for the first time since the 2011/12 season.
Kompany served as captain of Manchester City and the Belgian national team during his playing career, and began his coaching career at Anderlecht in Brussels in 2020. In the summer of 2022, he took over as head coach of Burnley and led the team to win the Premier League title in his debut season. This year, they did not stay in the Premier League as Burnley only got 24 points and ranked 19th.
