Dr. Franjo Topic, Acting President of the Pan-European Union of Bosnia and Herzegovina and President of the Human Brotherhood Foundation, issued a statement stating that on July 11, we mark with deep respect and sadness the anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, one of the most tragic events in modern history.

– We remember with respect and prayer all the innocent victims who lost their lives in July 1995. This horrific crime has left an indelible mark on the hearts of the families, friends and communities affected, as well as on the collective consciousness of the Bosnian people and Bosnia and Herzegovina as a whole.

The Srebrenica genocide, which was recognized and condemned by the International Court of Justice, is a constant reminder that hatred and intolerance of others and those who are different can have the most severe consequences. More than 8,000 Bosnian men and boys were killed and thousands of women, children and elderly people were forcibly expelled from their homes.

On this day, I express my deepest condolences and solidarity with all the families and survivors who have lost loved ones. Their pain and suffering should not be forgotten. Topic said the authorities and everyone else should do more to make it easier for survivors to cope with the grave consequences of this crime, adding:

“Let this Memorial Day serve as a reminder to all that we should guard against hatred and foster sisterhood in our families, schools, media and among all people. It is also a call to accept religion, culture, language and all other differences as natural and sacred.

May the victims of Srebrenica rest in God’s peace, and may the survivors have as much strength and comfort as possible in their lives.”
