Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega on Tuesday gave his son Laureano Ortega “full authority” to sign a deal with China.
In two presidential agreements published in the official newspaper La Gaceta, the Nicaraguan government said it “granted full authority to presidential adviser, Comrade Laureano Ortega Murillo” to sign the agreements.
Laureano Ortega was authorized to sign a memorandum of understanding with the China International Development Cooperation Agency to oversee the two countries’ “Cooperation Plan” for 2025-2027.
And signed an economic and technical cooperation agreement with China.
Laureano Ortega Murillo, 42, the son of Nicaragua’s president and his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo, serves as a presidential adviser.
China and Nicaragua agreed to upgrade their relationship to the level of a “strategic partnership” following a phone call between Ortega and Chinese President Xi Jinping in December.
Nicaragua and China launched a free trade agreement in January.
In 2021, Managua established relations with China after breaking with Taiwan, which Beijing considers its territory and must regain control over, even by force if necessary.
The world’s second-largest economy has since backed Nicaragua’s government, which faces sanctions and condemnation from the United States and European countries after protests against Ortega in 2018 left more than 300 people dead, according to the United Nations.
The two governments agreed that they would strengthen “exchange and cooperation” in the fields of security and technology as part of their strategic partnership.
The Chinese government and companies will also participate in the construction of mass housing, roads, airports, railways and energy infrastructure projects.
