Seretse Khama’s political battles and PR stunts tarnished his legacy

Sir Seretse Khama is the only person besides Jesus to be commemorated with a national holiday in Botswana’s national calendar. However, Sir Seretse Khama Day is the only holiday with a local character.

Although he never ceremonially donned the royal skins, Sir Seretse (born 1 July 1921) was recognised as the kgosi (paramount traditional leader) of the Bangwato tribe, whose capital was Serowe. After his death in 1980, some of his subjects had long lobbied the government to declare a national holiday in his honour. In 2005, President Festus Mogae finally granted this wish, but with the explicit stipulation that, while Sir Seretse Khama Day was a national holiday, it would not be commemorated throughout the country, but only celebrated in Serowe. As a result, on 1 July 2006, the first Sir Seretse Khama Day was commemorated at the main kgotla in Serowe.
