The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has reported a record number of road accidents during this year’s 60th Independence celebrations compared to the same period in 2023.
Harry Namwaza, deputy commissioner of national police, said there were 36 road accidents in 2024.
This figure is an increase from the 18 road traffic accidents registered in 2023.
In 2024, 13 people died in road traffic accidents registered, while in 2023, the death toll was 8.
In 2024, 44 people were injured in such accidents, a significant increase from 14 injuries in 2023.
During the three days, 91 drivers were fined for drink driving, 337 drivers were fined for speeding and 2,112 drivers were fined for exceeding the seating capacity of their vehicles.
Namwaza said the MPS attributed the increase in accidents to drivers’ failure to abide by road traffic rules and regulations.
