BEIJING: China’s coast guard said it had “allowed” the Philippines to evacuate a sick personnel aboard a rusting warship that ran aground on the Second Thomas Shoal, in waters claimed by both countries, on humanitarian grounds.
The China Coast Guard issued a statement late on Tuesday (July 9) saying that the China Coast Guard monitored and verified the entire operation process on Sunday. A spokesman for the China Coast Guard said that this move was made at the request of relevant Philippine parties.
A month ago, the Philippine Coast Guard accused its Chinese counterpart of blocking medical evacuations on a warship, calling the move “barbaric and inhumane.”
The Chinese Foreign Ministry said on the same day that China would allow the Philippines to deliver supplies and evacuate personnel if Manila notified Beijing before sending a mission.
