Tonight FK Panevěž made its debut in the UEFA Champions League. In the first qualifying round of the tournament, last season’s champions faced HJK Helsinki at home. Panevěž won this match with a score of 3:0 (1:0).
The visitors started the match at the “Aukštaitija” stadium positively, but the hosts defended well. In the 13th minute of the match, Panevěž created a dangerous moment at the goal of the Finnish champions. Ernestas Viliulis entered the visitors’ penalty area from the right and made a sharp pass, but Sivirtas Gusi did not touch the ball. In the 17th minute of the match, Panevěž scored the first goal of the game. E. Viliulis, who was the first to rush to the cross of Federico Palacios, put the ball into the visitors’ goal – 1:0.
After half an hour, the players of Panevěž played another brilliant period. Initially, Cheikhou Dieng’s long-range shot was deflected off the crossbar by the HJK goalkeeper. After the break, the game was longer on Panevězh’s side, but the defense of the Lithuanian champions was reliable. In the 65th minute of the match, FK Panevězh extended their lead. A player of the visiting team intercepted Luca de Vega Lima in his own penalty area, which violated the rules, and the referee awarded a penalty from 11 meters away. N. Gorobsov accurately achieved this goal – 2:0.
Inspired by their success, the Lithuanian champions scored again in the 67th minute. Noel Mbo, who had just come on after the substitution, scored with a precise shot from close range – 3:0.
In the 70th minute, Panevěž was outnumbered on the field. The home team’s Shekou Dieng received a second yellow card and the game ended early.
Having gained a numerical advantage, the Finnish champions took the initiative. The goalkeeper of the “Panevežys” team, E. Timburas, had a lot of work to do and saved several dangerous shots from the opponent. The Lithuanian champions maintained their advantage and won the game with a score of 3:0.
