Giles Baum, chairman of the Democratic Party parliamentary group, stressed that the party is committed to a social liberal policy and positions itself as the “social center.”

At a news conference on Tuesday before the summer recess, Baum stressed the need for Luxembourg to remain competitive and finance important investments while providing support for its most vulnerable citizens.

He defended the Democrats’ record in the previous coalition government, noting they had taken steps to ease rising energy prices. He also backed initial measures by the new government led by the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV), such as adjusting taxes in line with inflation and increasing aid for low-income earners.

Baum acknowledged that there is still a lot of work to be done, including major tax reform with a focus on personalization.

He reiterated the Democratic Party’s opposition to overly restrictive policies, noting that people are more likely to accept climate neutrality if they are properly supported. He pledged that all measures will be kept under review.

When it comes to housing, Baum refuted the claim that the government favors real estate developers, and stressed that financially, the government will allocate more funds to public construction and direct support for citizens.
