Former All Blacks forward and former Japan head coach Jamie Joseph will coach the Otago Highlands in 2025, the Super Rugby team said on Tuesday.
Joseph replaces Clark Dermody, who became assistant coach following a behind-the-scenes reshuffle.
Joseph, 54, served as the Highlanders’ director of rugby this season.
The Dunedin-based team finished sixth this year, knocked out by the ACT Broncos in the quarter-finals, after finishing ninth last season in Dermody’s two seasons in charge.
“I am eager to work hard with Clark and the rest of my coaching staff next season,” Joseph said in a statement.
“My goal is to take this team far and create a record of success that we can all be proud of.”
This is his second time coaching the Highlanders and he led the team to the 2015 Super Rugby title.
He later took over the Japan national team and led them to the quarter-finals as hosts of the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
He resigned after Japan was eliminated in the group stage of last year’s World Cup.
Joseph played 20 Test matches for New Zealand during his career.
