The Department of Audiology at Iran University of Medical Sciences said that 5% of the world’s population suffers from hearing problems and stressed that regular hearing checks are necessary.

Dr. Akram Pour Bakht; a faculty member of the Audiology Department of Iran University of Medical Sciences said on the occasion of World Deaf Week (last week of September): World Deaf Day was established in 1985 by the World Federation of the Deaf and approved by the world organization.

He added: The purpose of celebrating this day is to raise the level of awareness among relevant government and non-governmental organizations, experts and the general public about the challenges faced by deaf people in the society.

Purbakht said that the Department of Audiology at Iran University of Medical Sciences believes it has a responsibility to inform the people and authorities, to make the deaf aware of their abilities, and to remind them that sign language is one of the ways for the deaf to communicate with other deaf and hearing people.

The audiologist pointed out that deaf people have their own ways of communicating, and society should recognize these ways and provide more conditions for the existence of deaf people in society. He said that deaf people and their families need to believe in their own abilities in order to have more confidence in society.

Pourbakht also reminded: In recent years, due to the virtualization of classes in the Covid-19 era, as well as the use of hands-free, loud music and classes by teenagers and young people, it is necessary to provide students with necessary training. Students should take care of their ears at school.

He said that continuous exposure to loud noise is one of the causes of hearing loss, adding: People who work in loud noise due to their jobs (factories, military centers, industrial centers, etc.) should pay attention to their hearing health.

A professor at Iran Medical University stressed that these people should use ear protectors and leave crowded environments for a few minutes to give their ears a rest after being exposed to loud noises.

Noting that more than 460 million people, or about 5% of the world’s population, suffer from hearing problems, he stressed the need for reference to audiology and regular hearing checks.
