Quito, July 8 (Sputnik). – Ecuador’s former Vice President Jorge Glas (2012-2018) will have to remain in the maximum security “La Roca” prison after the rejection of his appeal request for a writ of habeas corpus for his release on Monday.
“Judge Patricio Vidal has rejected the habeas corpus appeal filed by lawyer Karen Gomez in favor of former Vice President Jorge Glas,” local Radio Pichincha confirmed.
Upon learning of the ruling, the former vice president’s international defense team, Juscogens Law Firm, said it was unfair that Glass’s appeal was dismissed through a resolution that “lacked sufficient legal basis.”
“This decision not only ignores the powerful arguments presented by the defense, but also highlights the existence of bias that undermines basic principles of justice and fairness,” he said in a statement.
The defense team claimed that the government’s statements were inaccurate and sought to downplay the seriousness of the health condition of the former vice president, who has been held in a maximum-security prison since April after being captured by Ecuadorian public forces inside the Mexican Embassy in Quito.
“Contrary to the government’s claims, Jorge Glas’ detention conditions are deplorable and violate his fundamental human rights,” the former official’s defenders said in a statement.
The former official reportedly attempted suicide in prison from April to date and was diagnosed with severe depression with psychotic symptoms.
Lawyer Andres Villegas noted that his client had suicidal thoughts because he was not interested in living and, if nothing else, he decided to give himself two months to live.
The National Service for Integrated Care of Adults Deprived of Their Liberty and Young Offenders (SNAI) said Glass received 79 medical services, two of which were in the field of psychiatry.
The prisoner said there is no full-time doctor at “La Roca,” but he visits once a week.
In addition, he requested that he be allowed to spend more time in the yard, as he currently only counts 30 minutes every three days. He also confirmed that there were rats in his cell that had bitten him several times and that he had not received the food recommended by the nutritionist during the three months he was deprived of his freedom.
“He has never seen his relatives and has not had access to international legal defence since June 21,” Brussels-based law firm Juscogens said.
On July 4, the Revolutionary Citizens Movement (RC, left), to which Glass belongs, announced the creation of the International Commission for the Freedom of the Former Vice President, whose first action was to submit a request to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to expand preventive measures in favor of the former vice president of Ecuador.
Glas was convicted of two corruption cases and is currently being prosecuted for a third, although he has expressed his innocence and denounced political persecution due to his links to the political movement of former President Rafael Correa (2007-2017). (Sputnik)
